September 1, 2026 – Incoming master’s and doctoral students at the School of Advanced Materials took part in orientation workshops designed to ease their transition into graduate life. Organized in partnership with a professional counseling team, the sessions focused on peer bonding and emotional preparedness for the research years ahead.

The afternoon opened with icebreaker games that quickly turned nervous first encounters into laughter and easy conversation. Students then took part in a reflective exercise that used the four seasons as a prompt for sharing personal expectations and current mindsets—a low-stakes way to surface both common ground and diverse perspectives.

The main activity asked small groups to build a “tree” from craft materials, with each part of the tree representing a different dimension of graduate life: roots for experience and strengths, trunk for shared values, branches for future directions, and leaves for individual goals. The resulting creations—some intricate, others minimalist—offered a tangible snapshot of each group’s collective aspirations.

By the end of the workshops, students had moved from introductions to genuine connection. The sessions are expected to carry forward into stronger class cohesion and research collaboration.
